Hello Share,
If you would like to be an engineering sales, sure more the professional knowledge and skills that you can learn would be more helpful in your career in engineering sales. So it is really hard to say necessary or not, depends on your planning in this industry~ From Jane.

Share: I believe it would valuable for you to understand mold lead-time as well as the time involved with sampling tooling, collecting data, etc. Parts vary in complexity and being able to explain why one may take longer to develop vs another will help your customer better understand why you may tell them 8 weeks one time and 14 weeks for another.

The more knowledge you have, you will be in a better position to provide solution or proposal to your customers. All of us prefer to go for "one stop solution center". This en-covers not only design. You should have knowledge in plastic material, machine, auxiliary equipments needed and process methodology. You will learn all of this during discussion with your mold makers, designers and customers. As you widen & deepen your knowledge, you will realize that your job is becoming easier and more fun. In plastic industry you will never stop learning and that's why it is fun.

It is very hard for a girl in mould field, I think you do not have enough time to learn mould design, but you need to know the procedure of mould making

Don’t think of yourself as a sales girl, not unless your male colleagues call themselves sales boys, which I doubt. You are sales and your gender is not an issue. You have not told us what you are selling but if it is injection moulding services or mould making services then a knowledge of mould design will be very helpful. As always with selling, put the stress on customer benefits rather than supplier features.

Hi Michael, I agree with you. Some of my friends think I don't need to learn the design, because we have project engineers to communite with the customers. As Jane said above, it depends on my planning in this industry, I consider it carefully, and would like to be an engineering sales as my career in future, more professional knowledge, more helpful to my job, thus I can service my customers better.
Thank you for your comments, I will keep them in mind.
All the best !

Hi Share, From the professinal point of view I agree with Clive, customer only care about is you are the window or interface between them and your company, not really care about your gender.
You get more engineering , that can give you a more comfortable and effective to communication between your customer and your company, to your customer, the less product develop and produce time means can get more profit or success.
Some times your customers are profesional in their feld, such as medical or auot etc, but might not really a profesional at the plastic or tooling issue, and if you get some engineering back ground , I mean you learn some plastic design knowledge, you can help to "translate" your "mold designer language" from your designer side into the "language" your customer can understand,
