Design products with your mold maker

It's easy to say a new product designer should be more professional but in fairness, product designer looks at it as a product to be used, sold whatever. A mold maker or molder looks at it a t piece to be produced. It is the function of a good, thorough, experienced mold maker to suggest corrections in part design based on his knowledge of how the part will process.

I note your comment James re the designer looking at it from the perspective of aesthetics and sales. I work from concept thro to manufacture as a consultant. I teach 1) product design where quality starts. (i.e.If it can be made easily then quality follows easily) As does profit from sales.
2) In these blogs we often see the use of MoldFlo as an answer to a problem. MoldFlo should be used during product design to avoid the problem. If needed by the mould maker then it is too late and we have justified complaints from Zenon.
Whether you like it or not it boils down to the NPI team not doing their job properly.

It is reasonable to expect product designers to have basic knowledge of the manufacturing process that will be used to make their product, however product designers do exactly that... design products and cannot be expected to have intimate knowledge of tooling, moulding or the multitude of other processes that may be used to make and finish a product.
I was a toolmaker for many years and have been involved in injection moulding all my working life. I have a great deal of experience and use my expertise as an independent consultant managing project that include all phases of the product life from concept through tooling and product manufacture for many clients who have varying degrees of knowledge in any of these areas. I work very closely with designers to ensure the product is fit for tooling and manufacture before the toolmaker receives the data which saves considerable time, expense and not least of all frustration on the part of the toolmaker and the designer.

I'm sorry but I hate this comment. I spent more than 20 years as a custom molder and the last few as a consultant. This is what I think. When you think your part designer is being unreasonable it is up to you to better understand the reasons for his position. Then you must think of a solution which meets his needs and is moldable. Then you must present it effectively, so he understands. It is axiomatic that you will have to help with flow, avoid sinks and gas traps. This must be done while keeping the product function and design foremost.
Frankly, one of the big challenges in buying molds in China is making myself understood. I am a senior, sophisticated molding expert. I have communication problems with Chinese mold designers and builders. So, I have a suggestion; Improve your English, or hire someone truly bilingual, then improve your attitude.
The customer may not always be right, but he is always the customer.

When communicating with tool shops in China, it can be a problem. You think they understand, but then you find out they didn't and now you have a problem. We represent tooling companies here in the U.S. that have engineers on the ground in China, malaysia, Portugal, Taiwan, South Korea to watch everything being done, so as to prevent misunderstanding or where short cuts are being taken to save a few cents. This will assure your getting exactly what you have ordered. If you build your tooling in China, please bring it back to the states to manufacture your product, as we represent suppliers that can compete and this gives you the ability to market your product as made in the USA.

There is sever good things in previous comments but I think that this is important to remember that we from Europe and US are coming with parts that design freezed while our Chinese consider as start for negotiations. They don't dare to ask you if this is final decision. The warnings from Chinese mold makers are very often coming in all kind of ambiguous ways and for some of us will even not help that they learn English because they will not tell straight what they want to do. I think that our young fellow is starting to realize this part of non verbal communication and when to apply.
